Strategically located between Woking and West Byfleet, the Sheerwater Estate was developed in the early 1950’s by the London County Council to house families that relocated from London after the Second World War.
The majority of the estate’s housing stock is social housing with a very high number of one bedroom units. Over the years the estate has become one of the most deprived areas in Surrey.
Woking Borough Council has embarked on a regeneration programme for Sheerwater. The vision is for the estate to become a contemporary and sustainable new ‘Garden Suburb’ that will provide high quality new homes, improved and reshaped public realm and open space and superb new leisure and play facilities.
The scheme requires the demolition of 450 dwellings and the construction of 1060 new private and affordable homes, together with improved infrastructure, public transport provision and public realm that gives priority to non-car modes of travel.
Three master plan options were developed with the preferred option being submitted for planning at the end of 2014. Construction is due to commence in 2016.
CampbellReith is employed to advise on the Civil, Transportation and Structural Engineering elements of the project and to progress the detailed design. This includes the provision of some 35 sections of new streets, the foul and surface water drainage system including SUDS, new public realm and the opening of the Reve Ditch.
